Hexahedrite - North Chile

North Chile 28.7 grams

Hexahedrites are only 62 out of 35,000 known meteorites
and only 6 were observed to falls.

Note that not all IIAB irons are hexahedrites (many are coarsest octahedrites),
and that not all hexahedrites are IIAB irons (there are a few hexahedrites
of taxonomic group IIG known).

Here are some of those "hexahedrites" which are not IIAB's:
Bellsbank, IRANOM; Wasson: IIG
Kendall County, IRANOM
Morden, IAB?
Twannberg, IRANOM; Wasson IIG

Hexahedrites have between 4.5 and 6.5 percent of nickel
Their name derives from the cubic (hexahedral)six sided crystals.

When cut, polished and etched with nitric acid or ferric chloride,
Hexahedrites produce a series of lines called the Neumann lines
caused by impact shocks. This is how you identify a hexahedrite,
by the presence a system of narrow, flat lamellae (plates) in the kamacite.
These lamellae are believed to have been shock-induced,
suggesting that the hexahedrite parent body experienced a major impact.
